In the beginning of the pilot the Trio were still human. They share a day at sea, then end up out of gas. They paddle to Maiko Island. While on the island they get stuck in an enchanted cave with a sea pool. They swim out through the pool, and are then rescued by the coastguard. The next day they learn what the pools magic had done to them. From then on whenever they get wet, salt or fresh water, they transform into Mermaids. Their tails are an elegant golden color. Their clothes disappear when they change and reappear when they change back. Also they find that, despite the fish like appearance of their tails, they cant breath underwater only hold their breath a long time. These Teen Mermaids are played by actual teenagers.
